NEWS & INSIGHTS > Thought Leadership > Delivering Mechanical Solutions in a Live, High-Stakes Environment
Aug 19, 2025
When Colorado State University set out to expand the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital—one of the top veterinary programs in the nation—it faced a significant challenge: upgrading a highly complex facility without interrupting its 24/7 operations.
U.S. Engineering Construction is delivering the full mechanical scope for the project, including piping, plumbing, and sheet metal systems that support hospital operations, research lab environments, and classroom spaces, all while the existing hospital remains fully active. That requires precision, planning, and a commitment to execution that doesn’t leave room for error.
Our work began long before we arrived onsite. We knew that working in a live hospital environment with surgical suites, classrooms, and clinical spaces in constant use would require meticulous coordination. To overcome these constraints, we leaned into our proven processes:
One of the most demanding phases involved integrating the new central utility plant into the functioning facility. We routed 8- to 10-inch heating and glycol piping through high-traffic areas of the hospital without halting services. That kind of work takes not just expertise, but trust, communication, and discipline.
CSU is targeting LEED certification for the expansion, and the mechanical systems we’re installing are key to achieving it. From heat recovery systems and water-based heating to high-efficiency air handling units, the infrastructure is designed to support both sustainability goals and strict air quality requirements for animal care.
As always, we rely on the systems that set our team apart: consistent documentation, quality assurance at every phase, and a shared commitment to delivering value that lasts.
This project carries special meaning for many of our team members who live in Northern Colorado, and for those of us who are CSU alumni, it’s even more personal. We’re helping shape a space that will serve the community and train the next generation of veterinary professionals.
We’ve partnered with CSU on many projects over the years, and this one stands out for its complexity, its impact, and the shared sense of purpose driving every step.
