The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Mid-America Region recently recognized U.S. Engineering Co. and its partners for mechanical work completed for the new Ewing Marion Kauffman School. The project earned a Design-Build Merit Award for Mechanical Projects over $5 Million.

Extensive collaboration at the beginning of the project ensured the best systems were utilized, and because of this preplanning, the project came in under budget and ahead of schedule.

The project included the renovation of an existing three-story building and construction of a new three-story building. Built in phases for a total of 230,000 total square feet, the project included state-of-the-art science classrooms, a cafeteria, a commercial kitchen, a gymnasium and administrative and common areas.

The project also included a new central chilled water plant and a high efficiency boiler plant to serve the new building as well as the existing building. Though no LEED Certification was pursued, the design and construction met LEED Silver requirements.

JE Dunn Construction was the general contractor on the project, and Gibbens Drake Scott was the mechanical engineer.
