U.S. Engineering’s Field team was recently mentioned in the article “University of Kansas Expansion – U.S. Engineering and P1 Group, Inc.” by The United Association (UA) Journal, Aug. 2017. pp. 10-17
This article talks about the work being done on the KU full-campus renovation project, specifically the work currently underway on the Integrated Science Building, the underground parking facility, and the Central Utility Plant.
The Integrated Science Building will house new chemistry teaching labs, a clean room suite designed to focus on life sciences and materials science, and a 350-seat auditorium built to accommodate conference presentations. The new student union, housed right next to the ISB, is being designed with a fully functioning kitchen to cater large events. The new underground parking facility, overall infrastructure improvements, and CUP will ensure KU can handle the increased traffic and activity.
The KU-U.S. Engineering project has been a design/build project, which means that U.S. Engineering has been involved from the design stage as a design/assist partner. The manufacturing on this job has been significant, and there has been a lot of offsite prefabrication of skid-mounted equipment and pipe racks-all done by the UA and expertly constructed utilizing signatory contractors out of Plumbers Local 8 in Kansas City, MO, and from Pipefitters Local 208 and Plumbers Local 3 in Denver, CO.
Phil Ellsworth, Assistant Director, Design & Construction Mgmt., KU, stated,
“The ISB, CUP and parking facility project is a $350 million, public/private partnership, and it’s the first one that we’ve done. We are adding 280,000 square feet in research and teaching space. Even though Kansas is a right-to-work state, the bulk of our construction is done by union contractors. It’s been our experience that these jobs are always done right. U.S. Engineering has been doing a great job on mechanical and plumbing for this project.”
